Culinary Conundrum 6/12

Well I’m certainly not going to fool anyone around here am I? There are another 6 but maybe I’ll call time on it early or throw in a couple of ringers to see what happens.

For those of you who aren’t bored yet, here’s the next one.

I think this one is a knife sharpener.

Sure is. I have one identical to that in a drawer about six feet from where I am sitting.

    Yep, knife sharpener.

Have one of those too. Didn’t know what it was though.

We too have one sitting in the cutlery drawer. They’re useless and leave a very rough edge on the knife but my Japanese sharpener is stuck in Berwick. It’s also very easy to slice into a knuckle or two if one isn’t careful, as I’ve found.

I prefer old-fashioned stones and butcher’s steel, myself.

    I can’t stand the sound. I let the not-wife sharpen the knives…

I’d agree these things are pretty lethal, but they are easy to use (or appear so) which is why they are popular. I have several of varying designs, and none of them gives a decent edge. They are just about OK for restoring a blunt edge to something approaching sharp, but they never get beyond that. I sharpen with a rotary water stone to a razor edge and then keep it that way with a steel. They stay sharp a long time if you store them correctly, i.e. no metal-to-metal contact.
