Dance or…..?

JD and the dilemma of dance:

I came across this in the Telegraph blogs, Stephen Hough asks is this dancing or gymnastics or circus. See what you think.

I thought the effortless artistry and athleticism was impressive whatever label you wish to put on it. So I decided to ask the expert, my friend TheDancingGirl. This was her reply –

… definitely dance. It’s all about the music not just throwing in acrobatics. They are very fit and strong but they work at making the moves fit the music and those ballets are written down and are exactly the same for each dancer.  Fantastic to watch.

I will not tell you what her comments were about the synchronised clapping from the audience, it is unprintable.

I’d say definitely dance, too – and very graceful.

Dancing, definitely. Athletic, obviously, but it’s formal and structured and the purpose is artistic rather than merely physical. And where did he get ‘circus’ from? Nothing like.

    Thanks for this.

I follow ballet and this looked like exceptional ballet to me – but then I know so little of circus and gymnastics to make the suggested comparisons.

As far as the clapping is concerned, an appreciative audience were just swept away by the performances and the company knew it.
