Manager at the shop was speaking of her eldest who had to fill in some form for university funding and had done so long ago. Being a careful person, she put a copy away.
He got a letter saying his funding was rescinded because he’d failed to submit the form signed by this person and that. She rang the university and they told her that as he had failed to comply …..
She put the woman straight but the woman asked how she could know it was her without ID. Manager reads the form out verbatim. “Well that could be anyone saying that,” she was told.
As if there wasn’t enough to do and she’s a nervous type person anyway, she had to go to the university with the copy and this time it was a different woman who accepted it but the funding was still rescinded because there’d been a certain allocation and it had all been disbursed.
She went a little bit irate and said that she and he had done the right thing, that the error was the university’s and now they were being penalized for that error. Sorry – funding’s all been allocated.
Manager asked me why people were like that these days – it wasn’t the only thing these past few weeks.
“Because they only employ idiots now,” I promptly replied. “Especially in the public sector but also in the private – if you have talent, initiative and a brain, you are not wanted. You are a threat to the narrative. You are a threat to the peace of an office because you can think for yourself and you can see things being done wrongly. No one wishes to be told that all the time.”
“Yes but why are they so stupid?”
“Education system, illiterate, not taught to think, taught not to think, sex, drugs and gaming rather than actually learning – many factors mediocritizing today’s employed. People who should be in charge of these things are kept out of them.
And it’s more than that – the type of work available is tickboxing and keyboard data entering. It’s becoming universal. So when you have to deal with someone at a utilities company or the Post Office or at the passport office, unless it’s one of the remaining old guard – and not even then – then the odds are that you’re dealing with an idiot. Yelling won’t help.
That’s why there are notices everywhere saying that they will not put up with abuse of employees. My question is – why would anyone abuse an employee? Because the idiot did something to you and now needs protection from you. This is the new workplace – UK 2012.”
She looked at me for a few moments, grinned and concluded: “That’s depressing.”
“Cup of coffee?”
