The year was 1998. Brandy and Monica were tearing up the charts with “The Boy Is Mine.” Saving Private Ryan was introducing the world to an exciting young actor named Thomas Hanks. And a young model, Melania Knauss, was at a Fashion Week party hosted by Paolo Zampolli. It was there that she met a man named Donald Trump. And it was there that Donald Trump asked her for her number…while he was on a date with another woman. This story comes from a Harper’s Bazaar profile of Melania:
Melania was 28, and Donald was Donald: a father of four, 24 years her senior, and recently separated from his second wife, Marla Maples. (He was previously married to Ivana Trump; they divorced in 1990.) “He wanted my number, but he was with a date, so of course I didn’t give it to him,” Melania recalls of their first exchange.
“I said, ‘I am not giving you my number; you give me yours, and I will call you.’ I wanted to see what kind of number he would give me—if it was a business number, what is this? I’m not doing business with you.” Instead, Donald gave her all of his numbers—”the office, Mar-a-Lago, home in New York, everything”—and told her to call.
Melania did call, and the rest is history. Isn’t that adorable? The lesson: When in doubt, give her all your numbers.
These are the things which make the world go round.
In 2015, asked about her husband’s presidential campaign, Melania said, “I encouraged him because I know what he will do and what he can do for America. He loves the American people and he wants to help them.”
When asked by The New York Times what her role would be if Trump were to become president, Melania replied: “I would be very traditional. Like Betty Ford or Jackie Kennedy. I would support him.”
Awwww, don’t you think she’d make a smashing first lady? Please be honest – Hillary with Bill or The Donald with Melania? Think of the receptions and balls they’d need to attend around the world, let alone the hosting in Washington.

Because she was a supermodel most people would write her off at first glance as a typical blonde bimbo type. But, she apparently speaks 5 languages and runs her own successful beauty companies as well as running 6 homes. Not on her own, granted, but I think the White House may not impress either of them. Yes, it’s America’s iconic seat of power supposedly and there’s Camp David and Air Force One, but they already have the trappings of power so shouldn’t be overawed by the experience.
Which means they can get down to business right away. If they can, because even if he does the unthinkable, he will be up against an establishment determined to stymie him at every turn. Just like Corbyn has had to endure on a much smaller scale.
And if it’s true, I did like that she has raised her son without a nanny. And she’s kept in the background being supportive of her husband but not trying to grab attention away from him. Which suggest either a strong lady, very sure of herself or she’s been ordered to stay out of the limelight. She wouldn’t be the first non native born First Lady and I’m sure she would be an asset for him when travelling abroad.
Here’s hoping….
Yes, all of those things. No leader succeeds without a strong, intelligent woman behind him and she is certainly that, plus beautiful. The public do like that – they feel more reassured if he has a lady like that toning him down. And America likes a leader who kicks butt.
Hope she appears a lot with him as together, The Donald is almost acceptable. Vastly better than the Clinton crime family. The last teflon prez was, of course, Ronnie Raygun.
And what does America need most? A prez to walk tall and espouse American values. Rubio? Don’t think so.
Oh God, not more bloody talk about walking tall. It usually seems to mean killing heaps of foreign civilians.
As long as it is the right ones who cares?
A hot first lady, that will be a novel experience.
Would be nice – why should Carla have all the fun?
No two ways about it, she’ll give Trump a bump. Even the ladies admire his arrangements. Plus, it’s about damn time we had a German in the White House. Who knows but perhaps Trump will loan her back to replace Merkel.
