Demise of Marks and Sparks

Why is Marks and Sparks failing?

Many reasons are given, many pundits have had a stab at it, methinks it’s a bit K Martish and this commenter puts it in perspective:

#  How this store survives I do not know. Its food is overloaded with garlic and overpriced. Their clothes are staid and the std measurements always cater for women with big bums . Yer grannie might like it ,but its not for me . Staid and old fashioned. Trotting out a lot of geniatric models most have never heard of doesent encourage anyone to wear their clothes. [Paganthegoat]

#  It has been declining for years, because it is run by one clown after another. Because the Board who selects them wants a clone of themselves so they have a fit. Lets be honest, any company who selects people to fit in the long term failures in their current posts will NEVER EVER achieve change. [Karol Rogers]

How close to reality is the store itself?

It is our intention that nobody leaves M&S and we will work as hard as possible to ensure that we can deliver against this promise. [Steve Rowe, Chief Executive of Marks & Spencer]

A bit harsh. We buy some of their food; the extra quality over the other supermarkets often justifies the price.

I stopped with M&S when they stopped selling almost all British made clothing, i can buy sweat shop clothes anywhere.

The real reason for the decline of the high street isn’t internet sales alone, its largely to do with the councils who run the boroughs.

They’ve made it increasingly difficult to reach the towns and park there for a fair cost, they’ve closed almost all the public conveniences and charge for those few remaining.

If they want me to return, they’ll stop with the ludicrous traffic schemes where you have to drive half way round the town to cover 100 yards, they’ll provide reasonable parking where your car won’t be vandalised or broken into by any of the increasing number of ne’er do wells hanging round town centres, so hows about getting the police to do some coppering too.
The council and the shops will have to also provide clean free toilets they’ll gladly allow members of the public to use, not just leave the providing of toilets to McDonalds, if they want my money the least they can do is let me have a pee.

Alternative is to sit on a comfy chair at home, no one’s going to pick your pocket or damage your car, pot of tea or glass of your poison, and shop in comfort via your PC.

The high street is on a self destruct mission, and the more anti solvent customer the towns get the less shoppers they will attract.

Particularly with that vital ‘pee’ factor for those of us of a certain age.
