There was an article at the Wail about a flu “epidemic” and I thought here we go – the sensationalist Wail against what really is. How can I tellwhat’s going on out there if I’m home here?

This was interesting from one reader:

Avoid public transport and stay away from super spreaders – children ! Hygiene – If unavoidable [contact], wash your hands more frequently- stop touching your face – leave your outdoor clothing / shoes at the door. Up the vitamin D3 & C – ventilate rooms even in winter – open a window – blow your nose and clean your teeth more frequently – Hydrate with water – flush the body out. All common sense unfortunately it’s not that common.

The fluids and cleaning down surfaces for sure, avoiding people and animals, I’ve also always suspected the water in winter so thorough boiling, keep boiled in jars, ventilation and warmth good, proper nutrition, up the vitamins a bit, use tissue or loo roll flushed after use, avoid hankies, wash hands after loo – sleep, change bed linen more often, don’t kiss or cuddle.

Having said all that, I feel I might be coming down with something just now, blogging might be light or non-existent tomorrow.  There is peripheral illness and then core.  This is mild but core this time.

Hope and pray you’re Ok and taking normal, sensible precautions.

I’ve tried avoiding the children but they cling to my legs whimpering.

Look after yourself sir, we need you here blogging your heart out.

When I commuted into London colds and flu were normal for me. After switching to a night shift they all disappeared. Having a railway carriage to myself worked wonders. Children are even worse carriers, imagine the germ stew in schools after this Christmas break.

Stock up on Lugol’s iodine – use it diluted to gargle with at the first sign of a sore throat – has multi uses and that’s just one. Also plenty of lemons, echinacea drops taken as a preventative and during onset. If coughing and sneezing starts use a clean towel over your pillow every night. Boil your pillow regularly.

Wear a decontamination suit whilst out.
    Avoid people. 🙂

    Be well, Mr H.

DR,I thought echinacea has been conclusively shown to be ineffective (despite all the ‘at the first signs’ marketing)?

JH, sorry to hear that . The only useful tip I can give is *grits teeth* to splash the cash , and not use loo roll, but buy expensive Kleenex Balsam tissues (other brands are available). These are a god send and prevent sand-papered noses!

Caused by a lack of whisky.

My vote is for the whisky option – must get some in. Actually have bounced back, law unto itself this ole bod.

Hence that question one must ask oneself which won’t go away – is one a man or a mouse?

DR, I’m not a doctor nor any kind of scientist and within the first couple of paragraphs I was sure it was total bunkum…just from the ‘unscientific’ style of its writing, the lack of definitions (there are , i believe, 3 ‘echinacea’ plants?) , the lack of an academic title for the main author and above all it’s having been published by a ‘fake’ journal (One of the founding editors, Professor Edzard Ernst, has described the journal as “useless rubbish”, primarily due to ineffective peer review.[5]).

But most of all, if any of its ‘findings’ had been replicated by serious scientists in the 13 years since it was published then it would have been front page on every newspaper on the planet.
