I remember discussing the Sonatas and Partitas compared to the 6 Cello Suites with a friend.

I said that I prefer the Cello Suites.

    He said ‘You are wrong.’

To me the violin screeches, even in the hands of a master.

I’ve got the Sonatas and Partitas played on viola. To my ear better than the violin.

    Anyway, try Cello Suite #6.

They’re all masterpieces, but that one is even better than the other 5.

Fan of the cello here, also clarinet for smooth reasons.

True. The Chaconne would make good materiel for a quartet, but Hillary has done better than I have heard before. One man only had the art to play them beyond even what Bach could have imagined, Fritz Kreisler. There exist only one recording, the Adagio at the opening of the book, which is stunning for the way it brings it to life. In 1930, the great German violinist Bronislaw Huberman described hearing Kreisler play the Chaconne, saying that even as he witnessed what Kreisler was doing he could not fathom the origin of his greatness.
