Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band

We’ve had some of these songs before, one in particular and they mean something to me because I was in Oz at that time, pre-1976 and I caught them at a concert in the hills outside of Melbourne in bellbird country.

There are two ways one can approach these things – the purist way which looks at someone like Andre Rieu and goes ewwwwww or those who think well at least they are familiarising themselves, the audience, with versions of old songs.  Jury’s out as far as I can see.

One or two of theirs are better, IMHO, than the originals, some not really that good at all. One thing they did secure, on their covers, was artwork by the cartoonist Leunig:
