du Pre was the last unique performance genius in the string world, and she came out of nowhere.
And went back to it, sadly.
Never keen, I’m afraid – maybe it was the cult around her, maybe her repertoire (I mostly listen to baroque, classical, early romantic – suffice to say, I don’t think she recorded much of the music I like).
Her faked foreign accent was irritating; but then I much like Stokowski’s work, and he did the same.
True about the eras – I prefer others, not crazy for Elgar for instance. And there was something a bit off, can’t quite pin it down. Maybe you have.
